Zdeno Chara joins the Thomas E. Smith Foundation’s Advisory Board of Directors

Hockey legend to support mission of improving lives of those affected by paralysis

BOSTON, MA — June 16, 2025 — The Thomas E. Smith Foundation (TESF) is honored to welcome Zdeno Chara, a Stanley Cup Champion, NHL legend, and longtime advocate for the paralysis community, to its Advisory Board of Directors. Chara’s appointment follows years of dedicated support, including his impactful three-year partnership on the Zdeno Chara Paralysis Grant. This grant awards $14,000 to an individual living with a spinal cord injury (SCI), and reflects the number of years Chara served as captain of the Boston Bruins. Chara brings with him a legacy of leadership, community impact, and a deep commitment to helping others overcome adversity.

Chara’s addition marks a significant milestone for the Foundation as it continues to expand its mission supporting individuals and families affected by SCI and paralysis. Known as one of the most respected leaders in professional hockey, Chara has long been admired for his work ethic, integrity, and passion––values that perfectly align with TESF’s core mission.

Zdeno represents everything the Thomas E. Smith Foundation stands for: strength, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to uplifting others,” said Thomas Smith, Co-Founder and President of the Foundation. “Having him on our board is both an honor and a game-changer. His voice, platform, and heart for service will elevate our work to new heights.”

Chara has remained deeply involved in philanthropic efforts throughout his career, both during and after his 24 seasons in the NHL. His commitment to advocacy, mentorship, and health and wellness initiatives complements TESF’s goal to empower those living with paralysis through innovation, awareness, and compassionate care.

“Joining the TESF board is a deeply personal decision for me,” said Zdeno Chara. “I’ve witnessed the life-changing work this organization does, and I’m honored to contribute my time and energy to a cause that helps so many families find strength and hope.”

Chara’s role on the board will include strategic advising, advocacy, and active participation in high-impact initiatives like the newly announced Thomas E. Smith Foundation Courage Classic, a first-of-its-kind charity hockey tournament hosted at TD Garden on September 29, 2025, in partnership with the Boston Bruins Foundation.
