Navigating Employment After a Spinal Cord Injury: Work Without Limits Can Help
Returning to the workforce after a spinal cord injury (SCI) presents unique challenges. Individuals living with paralysis often face the responsibility of selecting appropriate accommodations and equipment without full awareness of the supportive tools, workplace policies, or best practices that can ease their transition. This can complicate the critical process of reentering or joining the workforce, an important step toward sustaining income, securing health insurance, building professional relationships, and enhancing overall well-being.
To address these challenges, TESF partnered with Work Without Limits to host this webinar titled “Navigating Employment After a Spinal Cord Injury: Work Without Limits Can Help.” The session was held on Wednesday, May 21st, and featured a panel including TESF’s Executive Director & COO Sarah Merrefield, TESF President & Co-Founder Thomas Smith, and Kathy Muhr, Director of Community Engagement at Work Without Limits.
The webinar focused on empowering both employees and employers by highlighting key resources such as:
-
Networking opportunities that connect job seekers with inclusive employers
-
Guidance on how employment earnings can impact public benefits
-
Long-term benefits counseling through the Ticket to Work Employment Network
-
Information on workplace accommodations and how to access them
Unlike many health events, spinal cord injury and paralysis often come with significant out-of-pocket expenses that can impact an individual’s well-being and ability to meet career goals. Recognizing that no two spinal cord injuries are the same, the webinar emphasized the importance of finding the right role, organization, and accommodations tailored to each person’s unique needs.
At TESF, we remain committed to dismantling systemic barriers and fostering equitable access to care and opportunity. This webinar represents another step in our mission to support individuals living with paralysis in achieving independence and meaningful employment.
