Stronger Together Grant Program FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our grant program below

What if I cannot make a meeting request?

Please respond to the scheduling email as soon as possible if you cannot make any of the times offered. A TESF team member will work with you to ensure a meeting is scheduled. If the applicant does not schedule a meeting within two weeks of receiving the scheduling link, the application will be closed.

Why don’t you award used therapy equipment?

TESF is committed to ensuring that every grant recipient receives reliable, high-quality equipment that will support their long-term progress. For this reason, we only purchase new therapy equipment. Used equipment may have hidden wear, reduced lifespan, or unknown maintenance issues, which could lead to safety concerns or additional costs in the future. Providing new equipment allows us to make the most effective use of our funding and ensures recipients receive durable, dependable support.

What does it mean for my application to be "in-review"?

Once you receive notice that your application is under review, the TESF team will evaluate it and decide if a follow-up interview is needed. In some circumstances, applicants may receive an email with a scheduling link within three weeks.

How long will it take for TESF to respond to my application?

Due to a large volume of applications, our response time for a status change on your application may take several weeks. You will be notified via email if your application moves into review or has been closed or denied.

Can I still apply for a grant from TESF if I received a grant from another organization?

YES, you may still apply to TESF if you’ve received funding from another organization. As part of the application process, you’ll be asked to list any funding sources you’ve received or that you are currently pursuing for support.

Can I use money from another grant to assist with my current grant request?

Yes, applicants are welcome to combine support from other funding sources with their request. We recognize that many individuals rely on multiple resources to meet their full needs, and we encourage applicants to leverage all available support to help cover the total cost of their request.

Can I receive funding for personal needs or general expenses?

TESF does not provide funding for personal needs or general living expenses. All approved grant funds are issued directly to therapy facilities or equipment and modification vendors, not to individuals or personal entities.

What if my request falls outside of home modifications, equipment, or physical therapy?

All grant requests must fall within our application eligibility and criteria, which can be reviewed here.

Are there any specific deadlines I should be aware of?

All applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. If you receive an email from a TESF team member containing a scheduling link, please schedule your interview within two weeks of receiving the message. If an interview is not scheduled within that timeframe, your application will be closed.

Who reviews grant applications and requests?

We have a committee of people with lived experience from spinal cord injury that are supported by TESF staff.

If my application was declined, can I apply again?

Each eligible applicant is limited to one grant request per calendar year. We encourage carefully reviewing our application criteria before resubmitting.

Can I apply for more than one grant request at a time?

Each applicant is limited to one grant request per calendar year.

Can I apply for a grant over the phone?

We kindly ask that all applications be submitted online. If you need assistance, we encourage you to have someone complete the application with you or on your behalf. Please note any challenges you’re experiencing within the application itself.

Do you award grants to people that live outside of MA?

To date, TESF has supported individuals and families across 25 states. Anyone who is currently living in the United States is welcome to apply.

Can I meet with someone before applying?

Applicants will only meet with a member of the TESF team if they are contacted to schedule an interview. While we would love to speak with every applicant, the volume of requests we receive makes individual meetings impossible to offer broadly. We do encourage each applicant to take advantage of filling out your application with as much information as possible to help us make an informed decision.

Does everyone have a follow-up interview after submitting their application?

While we would love to speak with each and every applicant, due to our high of applications, only those contacted by TESF team members are scheduled for a follow-up interview. We encourage each applicant to take advantage of filling out your application with as much information as possible to help us make an informed decision.

Do I need to be enrolled in a physical therapy facility to request a therapy grant?

Yes, all applicants must be enrolled in a physical therapy program before requesting a therapy grant. TESF will not pay for costs typically covered by an applicant’s insurance.

Who can I contact if I have questions about my application?

Any questions you may have should be referenced on this page or within our application eligibility criteria. Please only contact the TESF team if you no longer need what you have requested on your application or you need to make a change to the application request.
