Chet Johnston receives Annual Zdeno Chara Paralysis Grant

Chet Johnston

June 2025 — The Thomas E. Smith Foundation (TESF) is proud to award the Zdeno Chara Paralysis Grant to Chet Johnston. Established in 2023, this annual grant is made possible through our partnership with NHL legend Zdeno Chara and provides critical support to individuals and families living with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and paralysis.

On April 11, 2025, Chet sustained a traumatic and life-changing spinal cord injury following a fall at Middlebury College. His story is one of resilience and determination. This grant will help ensure that he and his family can focus on recovery, independence, and building a life without limits—core pillars of TESF’s mission.

“We’re here to help people rebuild—not just rebuild their lives, but reimagine what’s possible,”
said Thomas Smith, Co-Founder and President of TESF.

This award not only honors Zdeno Chara’s legacy as a leader and community advocate, but also reinforces our belief that a strong network and timely support can transform recovery and #RedefinePossible for those living with paralysis.
